The five musicians of Dianto underwent a DNA test to trace their own origins and find out which (new) families they belong to. The results were surprising: the predominantly Spanish quintet (one member is from South America) turns out to have roots spanning from Greece to Scandinavia and from Mexico to the Balkans.

This new family tree is gradually revealed and made audible throughout the performance with music from the regions discovered through the test. Dianto performs both newly composed work and existing folk music. The quintet expands its own set of instruments to include a bass guitar, the ‘gaita’, a bagpipe from Galicia, and singing in Galician. DNA musically expresses the very diverse composition of the group’s DNA and is an ode to global citizenship.

During this program, newly written piece "Echoes of the Buried Lullaby" written by Ramin Amin Tafreshi will be premiered.

Directed by Wieger Meulenbroek
