The first years after birth - a phase in which you see, taste and hear all aspects of life for the first time. You become familiar with sounds that surround you and in a few years you will be at home in the sound world of your mother tongue. From now on, this language will occupy an important and special place in your life. You will learn other languages ​​later on, but when someone addresses you in your mother tongue, it gives a completely different feeling and the message is much more striking and deeper.

This impact of a mother tongue is something that is very interesting for artists. In music, this led to the emergence of the madrigal in the 14th century, derived from the Latin matricale, meaning mother tongue. These madrigals were written in the native language of the local population and composers, in contrast to the motets, which were mostly written in Latin and therefore unintelligible to many. The subjects of texts of the madrigal also come much closer to the listener and are much more personal than the Biblical texts of motets.

In the 15th and 16th centuries the madrigal flourished in Italy: many composers wrote beautiful madrigals that were often played by excellent musicians. These musicians played on instruments that were invented at this time, such as the trombone. In this way, the Italian madrigal became the mother tongue of the trombone, and of the trombone ensemble!

500 years later, the Nymphéas Trombone Quartet goes back to the origins of the trombone quartet and brings the repertoire, which is hardly played in the Netherlands today, back to the 21st century. The quartet plays music by, among others, Adriaen Willaert, Giovanni Rovetta, Giovanni Gabrieli and Josquin Desprez in new, own arrangements. These are the result of an investigation into repertoire from the heyday of the madrigal.

In addition, the quartet takes a look at the future: Composers Ramin Amin Tafreshi, Apollonio Maiello, Primo Ish-Hurwitz and Arjan Linker will present a modern view of the aesthetics of the madrigal in four new pieces for trombone quartet. The pieces are written on the basis of texts in the native languages ​​of these composers, with subjects that are close to the person and thus form a coherent program in combination with 15th and 16th-century madrigals.
