About the Event

Palpitations is a program filled with music that literally makes the heart beat faster. In this project, Thomas Dulfer combines his two passions: cardiovascular research and the bassoon.

The program features pieces directly inspired by his own heartbeat, such as Heart SOLO, in which he performs alongside his live heartbeat, demonstrating what happens to the heart when playing the bassoon. In addition to his own heartbeat, he incorporates the heartbeats of audience members in his new composition, Syntheny of Hearts, where these rhythms are transformed into music. To make this possible, a new heartbeat light-art installation will be created, serving both as a functional element and as the concert’s visual centerpiece.

Beyond the literal integration of heartbeats, Palpitations also highlights music that makes his heart skip a beat. This includes some of the earliest compositions for bassoon, such as Böddecker’s Sacra Partitura, as well as contemporary works like Azmeh’s November 22, which…
