The "Prelude for Piano" is a lyrical narration of mysterious harmonies and tempting melodies. Although the composer is committed to classical forms, the piece is an attempt to find new ways of developing musical ideas.
The interactions of the thematic and melodic phrases, however, reveal another mystery of the work. A strong sense of duality comes back over and over through the whole piece. A duality that perhaps comes from a question that has never gotten an answer. Or a duality that may have formed in choosing untraveled and unknown paths. Either way, this duality keeps questioning us throughout the whole piece and never gives a clear resolution, even with the very final chord. The work is the first piece that Ramin composed after moving to the Netherlands. Consequently, it is not far-fetched to say that his experiences with the process of immigration should have been the primary source of inspiration behind the creation of this work. It is a “prelude” to an unrevealed chapter to come.
